Advantages and Disadvantages of Fasting

Pros and cons of fasting

If you have seen my previous posts then you already know that I am a big time fan of Fasting. Hence obviously I can list many benefits of fasting, not because I am a fan but those benefits are scientifically proven. The major benefits of fasting are:-

Pros:-

Fasting Increases Human Growth Hormone:-

All types of fasting increase Human Growth Hormone. Why should you care about Human Growth hormone?
Because as its name suggests, it is important for the growth of the body. This hormone is even injected by athletes to gain size in the bodybuilding competition.
Personally, I am against this because I don’t want my body to rely on foreign supplies of HGH. I want my body to be as self-sufficient as possible.
Not only to gain muscle but HGH is important for proper brain function, Bone health, DNA repair, good metabolism and to maintain high energy level throughout your day.
As we grow old, ou body reduces the production of this human growth hormone( one of the many reasons why get fat easily as we grow old) so we have to rely on medication for it. But if you do fasting and merge it with some exercise, you can elevate your HGH without medication.

Healthy Liver

Half of the times liver doesn’t even show signs of damage. Well, this is an eye-opener because we all know the importance of liver in our body. Read symptoms of liver damage here.
Our liver has the superpower of regeneration. This means that our liver can regenerate after getting damaged. But if it takes too many injuries and gets scars all over it then it stops working.

If you want to live then trust me you don’t want that to happen. Hence you don’t mess with your liver. Now a big advantage of fasting is that it lets our liver heal. In the fasted state, our liver regenerates at a faster rate. In the fasted state all the harmful toxin inside our body gets expelled.

Diseases like fatty liver are very common these days thanks to our carbs rich diet. fasting can help those suffering from this disease tremendously by increasing your insulin sensitivity and also making your body utilize fat for energy.
Try fasting, your liver will love it.

Healthy Heart

I will start by telling you about a study of rats who fasted every other day were nearly 66% more likely to survive a heart attack than those on a normal diet. Not only this fasting can even have some great effects on people with coronary heart disease.

We all love our father and it is a well-known fact that men’s have a higher risk of heart attack than women. Ask your dad to do fasting every once in a while because you love him.

Healthy Brain

There have been many studies on the effects of intermittent fasting on the brain. If you are aware of the benefits of ketosis then lemme tell you when you do fasting your body starts producing ketones once all the glucose reserves are over.

This thereby results in the improved cognitive functioning of the brain and reduces the chances of getting Alzheimer’s disease.

I have heard people saying that if they won’t eat food their brain will stop working… -_- Seriously?
Imagine you are in the wild and you couldn’t find food. Will you be able to find food fast if your brain or body slows down?
At that time it is important for your body to work more efficiently so that you can find food as quickly as possible.

Our body works better in ketosis. Hence fasting is really good for your brain health.

Reduces Inflammation

Inflammation is the body’s attempt to heal itself after injury. Yes, it is a very important part of the healing process but the swelling and redness that we see at the time of healing can be reduced by fasting.

Inflammation is fine but chronic inflammation can result in chronic diseases. Fasting is anti-inflammatory. It means that it crops down the after effects of getting injured.

Cons:-

Dehydration

This is a serious issue and it is very common with the people who do fasting. See when you are not eating anything your body gets totally dependant on the water you drink. You have to drink a lot of water than usual but people often forget to do that resulting in dehydration.

I have never tried a dry fast because I am afraid of getting too much dehydrated. I believe that water is important if you want to do a total cleanse. But I will do a dry fast once so that I can review my experience with it. I have read many benefits of dry fasts so let’s hope they are all true. If they are then it will be a good new to all the skinny guys out there because it can be used to gain weight.

Bad Breath

Now, this might be a deal breaker for some of you who believe that breath is more important than all the benefits of fasting.

This happens because on fasting all the juices in your stomach are releasing that smell. That smell is not coming from your mouth it is coming from your stomach so no mouth freshener will work.

Fun Fact:- did you know that Listerine coined the term halitosis( meaning bad breath) as a disease to increase their sale. Before that, people had no idea of bad breath. I learned this fact from Adam ruins everything.

You will feel Cold

This is a problem that I face. Because our body is not digesting food the heat release from our body is reduced which result in making us feel as if the temperature has dropped.

Its a real problem in winters if you have to go outside. You will feel colder than usual. Well, it doesn’t stop me from doing fasting because it does not get cold enough to become an issue for me. If you feel too cold then increase turmeric in your diet. Why? Click here to find out.
